Soak up the Natural Beauty
Natural fun is always the best kind of fun. On Sanibel Island, Florida and the surrounding area you will certainly find plenty of opportunities for enjoying a wide array of natural beauty and attractions; all right in your very own backyard.
The Creature Meet-and-Greet is sure to be fun for everyone in the family. Head on over to Calusa Nature Center & Planetarium, where not only will the kids get the opportunity to investigate an array of live bugs in the Insectarium, but they even get the chance to dress up like one! There are also many other activities available, including snake feedings and the opportunity to see live turtles and baby alligators. Outdoors, you can hit the trails and tour a butterfly house, walk through an aviary and explore the touch tank. Top off your visit with a stop by the bobcat and fox area.
Are your kids complaining about school? If so, why not introduce them to the Sanibel Sea School where they can learn about the marine ecology and environment. This is truly a hands-on opportunity in which the kids are encouraged to touch and feel while they gain a deeper understanding of their local marine environment. The school also offers Nature & Sealife Cruises.
Why not load up the kids this weekend for a beach scavenger hunt? Look for crab holes, egg cases, conch shells, turtle grass, sea starts and more on the miles and miles of glorious white sand that make up the Sanibel beaches. Programs are available through Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation and Adventures in Paradise which are excellent for helping children learn more about their local environment.
Challenge the kids to a game of I Spy at the Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve. The boardwalk trails here are ideal for spotting a variety of birds as well as numerous other creatures. Volunteers are available daily to lead 1 ½ hour guided walks each day, all the while pointing out some of the more fascinating wildlife that make their home here.
As summer approaches, there is no better option for keeping gadget loving kids entertained than a visit to one of the geo-caches in Lee County; including at J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge, where they can take part in an earth-cache program or one of the Lee County Parks & Recreation facilities. GPS points can be followed to locate small treasures that have been planted while replacing them with other treasures. Keep in mind you will need a permit to place a cash in one of the parks.
